Review: Faith

Faith (The Great Doctor)

(Korea)

Watch it On:
Drama Fever, Hulu, Netflix, Viki

Who’s In it:
Lee Min Ho as Choi Young
KimHee Sun as Yoo Eun Soo
YooOh Sung as Gi Cheol
RyuDeok-Hwan as King Gongmin
ParkSe Young as Hong Se Ra
Kim Mi Kyung as Court Lady Choi

What it’s about:
A fusion fantasy-medical- Saeguk (Historical) series. I kid you not. That’s the description. Euen Soo is a pretty whiny plastic surgeon who'd like to find a hot rich guy to help her open a hospital, and well... have a hot rich boyfriend. Gen. Choi Young is one of Korea's ancient heroes (or at least he will be eventually) and just wants to find a "great doctor" to save his new Queen. Enter an inexperienced king, a mustache twirling evil villain, a gang of thieves, some faithful Woodalchi (palace guards), and one totally badass Court Lady Choi.

 You should know…
Look, it suffered some circular plot points (how many times can you get kidnapped before seriously doubting the training of the royal guard?)  There were a bunch of unfortunate issues with the actual production, which may have led to the uneven story telling.  But there’s just something inexplicably endearing about the heart of the story – which really comes down to what you do for family.  The Woodalchi, Eun Soo, Choi, Court Lady Choi, and even the royal couple pull you in with their conflicts between wanting their own lives and making the big sacrifice for someone you love.

Fair Warnings:
This was our very first kdrama.  And I think it still holds up well.  We are both fans of grand adventures and oooh! Shiny Costuming.  From the evil facial hair to the unexpectedly loveable Eun Soo with her bratty attitude.
Yes, I realize there appears to be a glow-in-the-dark lightsaber (phosphorus) swordfight...You'll live.
Also.  Time Travel.

Reactions:

S’ra

Holy Crap, how is it already 3:30 in the morning? It doesn’t matter, I MUST watch the next one, Choi Young can’t just sacrifice himself like that! Do something! Growls quietly. Also- they better not die, or decide it’s better for them to love from afar because they’re from times, cause I’m gonna throw things at the screen if that happens!!!

Verdict:
Obviously this was my first Kdrama love. It's still my favorite Saeguk.
